Investment Trusts have long been feted as an ideal vehicle for investors seeking to diversify their portfolio and, consequently, to minimise risk.

The post-war era of globalisation has been eclipsed by a mercantilist, Hobbesian era of trade friction and geopolitical disorder. The past few years have also featured a productivity and growth crisis across much of the developed world, and today’s backdrop of mild stagflation is likely to endure. Investors must therefore insure their portfolios with assets likely to weather such storms, but they should also remember that however uncertain the outlook, there is always value and growth somewhere. They often overlook opportunities at home, where valuations and income remain appealing. Beyond the UK, biotechnology is a crucial growth area a populations age and medical advances, spurred by AI, improve treatments. Finally, emerging markets offer compelling opportunities, but investors must tread carefully.
